Take Action on HB 258 for Electronics Recycling

As you may know from some of our earlier post, electronic waste is the fastest growing part of the waste stream and of the most toxic. It has not been properly addressed at any level and is something that behooves leadership from our elected official and....civic participation! We will be trying for a blast vote on HB 258 Monday. Gray Water 9-0 / HB 555 to Gov / HB 258 Needs Help

HB 259, to allow gray water in Montana, passed Senate Natural Resources 9-0 this afternoon in Executive Action.

HB 555 has passed the Senate without any amendments and now head towards the Governors desk. This bill creates an education program for electronic waste in Montana.

HB 258, to create a tax credit for the proper recycling of electronic waste, remains stalled in House Taxation. S.A.V.E. and the sponsor are hoping to find support on the House floor for a successful blast motion.

E-waste is a priority item for The S.A.V.E. Foundation. Electronic items are the fastest growing part of our waste system. It contains toxic components and valuable resources that should be kept out of the environment and reused in our economy. We see an education program combined with a tax credit incentive as the best way to address the challenges (see fact sheet below) of e-waste, especially regarding the huge existing stockpiles.

HB 259 & HB 555 To Be Heard this Monday, Electric Car bill heard last Friday

HB 259, to allow gray water separation in Montana, and HB 555, to create an E-waste education program, will both be heard in front of Senate Natural Resources committee this Monday, March 19th at 3pm. We are expecting a positive hearing for both.

SB 185 was heard in the House Transportation Committee last Friday, March 16th. This legislation would have Montana leading the way in allowing a new category of electric vehicle that would be similar to low-speed electric vehicles, but allow a speed of 35 miles per hour rather than the current 25 miles per hour limit (allowed on roads with 35mph speed limit or less only). This new class of vehicles, medium speed electric vehicles, has huge potential for urban commuting in Montana. These vehicles would be limited to travel on road with speed limits of 45 mph or less only.

Phone Books Recyclable this Month in Helena!

Pacific Steel and Recycling will be collecting phone books this month at their Helena location at National Avenue. Phone books used to be collected with newspaper, but due to the difficulty of recycling the Yellow Pages (dye), they are now taken seperatly and of less value. Pacific will collect the phone books for the next month while new phone books are making their way to households and businesses. There will be smaller collection site at the City of Helena Transfer Station.

5,300 lbs & 1,815 gallons of oil saved with March Plastics Recycling Drive!

S.A.V.E.'s plastics recycling drive this March collected 5,300 pounds of plastics and saved the energy equivalent of 1,815 gallons (One ton of recycled plastics saves the energy equivalent of 685 gallons of oil (link to number).)

Our next collection will be with Trash for Trees on April 28th at Northgate Plaza on Montana Avenue from 9a.m. to 4p.m.
