S.A.V.E.’s November Aluminum/Plastics Drive, Join SAVE Today, Future of Recycling in Helena! Transportation in Helena and More!
SAVE Faithful,
The drive is a little over three weeks away so be sure that you’re
ready to recycle come November 8th-11th! Hopefully the weather will be a
little kinder this year (last year we saw several inches of snow and
had to extend our hours to make sure that everyone had a chance to
recycle their plastics) so be sure to think warm thoughts-and warm coats
for those in need. SAVE turns ten in a month so be sure to become a
member today and join. And take a look at the recent article from
the Independent Record that outlines future details for permanent
plastics recycling for the city of Helena. Read below for updates on
transit and transportation from by S.A.V.E. VISTA Matthew Cramer,
including Helena’s designation as a Bike Friendly Community.

The Future of Plastics Recycling in Helena - From Chair Tyler Evilsizer
Tuesday October 15th, members of the City Commission, city
employees, and recycling entities from around Helena had a very
productive meeting on recycling. SAVE's position is that it is time for
the City to provide permanent plastics recycling, a position that was
laid out months ago during the City's budget process. We had hoped that a
City-sponsored program would happen before the New Year, but following
the meeting we recognize there still may be some work to ensure an
effective transition to a permanent program. At the meeting, city staff
expressed interest that SAVE continues to maintain the program.
We are pleased with the program's success over the last seven years:
we've seen the program grow tenfold. However, based on the tremendous
popularity of the program, the scale of collections, and the challenges
of ensuring safety in a winter parking lot, we believe the program has
outgrown the capacity of our volunteer-driven events. We think Helena
wants a permanent plastics program. We are committed to ensuring a
successful transition, so SAVE will continue to run bi-monthly events
until there is a permanent program in place, but we want to see a plan
for a permanent collection soon, especially with the upcoming challenges
of winter. We've demonstrated that a plastics program can work, and
we're ready to help the City set one up. Households in Helena and most
of the Valley pay for recycling at the Transfer Station. It's time that
some of the upgrades at the Transfer Station included giving residents a
sheltered location where they can recycle plastics year-round .

recycling. As always, SAVE will be your source for information as it
develops.

Helena Awarded Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community Designation
Helena will soon receive Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community status from The League of American Bicyclists.
All of the advancements in cycling made by the City of Helena, Lewis
& Clark County, Montana Department of Transportation, support of
education efforts, community organizations, and other proponents
resulted in the award. In his role as SAVE’s AmeriCorps VISTA, Matthew
Cramer assisted in the coordination of the application with Sarah
Sadowski, Chair of NMTAC, City and County Staff, Elected Officials and
other leading advocates. Other Montana Bicycle Friendly Communities
include Bozeman (silver), Billings (bronze), and Missoula (gold). With
the installation of a city wide trails network including Centennial
Trail, new street separated crossings and paths-such as the Broadway
tunnel, the Transportation Update, and other efforts, high designation
